Transperth woes

Transperth the bunch of scammers….

Recently, the local public transport system here (busses) upgraded their ticketing system from a magnetic strip (paper card) system (called Multirider’s) to a new proximity based card system named Smartrider…

Domain parking alternative

domain, why park, internet 3 Comments »

So after reading the article over at vohio.com I decided it was time to try out Why Park for myself as i have a few unused domains that need to start earning their keep. The signup process was very smooth, made payment through PayPal (via Clickbank), within a couple of minutes I was able to start adding sites.

So far I’ve added

Zero to four
Spelling help
Spelling basics

I’ll add a few more and see how things go.. so far my keywords have turned up good articles but the advertising content is not the most relevant… maybe time to try something other than AdSense. Unfortunately my domain provider is screwing around so I cannot point any of the domains I actually want too at it…

Ill post any further developments, But definitely think about giving it a go yourself.

Affordable, attractive invoices on Mac with Billings 2

Billings Screenshot - Small

Like many of techs I get the odd request to do work outside of my day job, usually its a job for cash but more often than not the customer wants to be invoiced for the work as its business related. If you’re like me the about of work is not enough to warrant a full accounting package, we don’t have any inventory and just need to charge for a few hours of work. Previously I had run MYOB First Accounts (on the PC) , its a fantastic package don’t get me wrong, but massive overkill for a small enterprise such as mine. Being a dedicated Mac user I figured I had really slimmed down my options.. I was very much mistaken.

I was just going to go through the troubles of compiling and installing PHP on my powerbook when I realised all I needed to do was uncomment the php4 line in http.conf and restart apache… duh..

1) Edit httpd.conf

sudo vi /private/etc/httpd/httpd.conf

2) Uncomment the line sthat says:

LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so

3)Restart apache

sudo apachectl restart

Accidently quitting Safari

Mac, Apple, OSX No Comments »

One of the most annoying things in my world at the moment is accidently quitting Safari when I have a number of windows and tabs open….Yea… I know its my own fault but damn its annoying… why does “w” have to be so close to “q” on the keyboard :-(

To combat this I added the following as suggested here

defaults write com.apple.Safari NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add "Quit Safari" "@^Q"

After restarting Safari the quit shortcut had been updated to “command + control + q” and “command + q” is no longer vald and just causes Safari to beep. YAY!

Removing system games form Windows XP

windows No Comments »

I was asked to remove all the default games (solitaire, minesweeper etc..) from a number of windows machines recently. The two options I came up with were;

  1. Use the add/remove programs utility on each machine to remove the games component.
  2. Use a login script that did the same thing with sysocmgr

The second option suited me better as it was quicker and required less time and user intervention.

Adding Samba machine accounts with a non root account.

samba, linux No Comments »

Recently I was installing a Samba PDC (Article coming soon) in a training room environment, I manually added all the machines to the domain using the root account and all was good. Sometime during the install I came to the realisation that I was going to have to ship new machines (that would need to be added to the domain) and I was not intending to supply the site onsite with the root password (as they has an admin account to accomplish what they needed) and I really didn’t want to be coming onsite for every additional machine.

Asterisk + Cisco CallManager Express Integration

Cisco, Aserisk 1 Comment »

Why
The new family of ISR routers provided by Cisco make great media gateways for PSTN connectivity and make a very nice IP enabled key system replacement. Unfortunately, the solution can be pricey and lacks some of the flexibility and functionality of Asterisk.

Our requirement was to integrate two offices, one with a CCME based install and the other a full Asterisk/SIP deployment with IVR and voice mail. The goal was to allow seamless dialing between the two offices maintaining the legacy extension numbers as well as allowing DID to all extensions. The CCME site had no provision for voice mail (without the purchase of a Cisco unity express module and licensing..$$$$) so the goal was also to gain seamless voice mail integration.
